Refrigerator Organization Tips

Refrigerators can go from perfectly organized to disaster zone in a matter of days. Implement a few tips to give your fridge a little structure and a LOT more sanity.

USE TURNTABLES

Deep shelves mean items easily get shoved to the back and forgotten. This leads to food waste and buying more than you need. Turntables give you easy access to everything on the shelf.

PRO TIP: Turntables come in different widths so measure your shelf depth and buy one slightly smaller. French door refrigerators can often handle up to an 18″ turntable while side-by-side refrigerators will need smaller.

CATEGORIZE INTO BINS

Labeled bins keep like items together so you can always find what you need.

The MOST IMPORTANT category to include is LEFTOVERS! My family knows to check this bin before making or packing lunches. This means less food waste!

Your bin depth will depend on your shelf depth. A frequent size is 14″, but some French door refrigerators can handle up to 16″. You often have to play with the arrangement of the bins inside the refrigerator to take into account different parts of the refrigerator sides that might stick out.

PRO TIP: Always check for different package quantities when ordering bins. Don’t rush to order two 2-packs when a 4-pack might be available at a price that makes the cost per bin much less.

LABEL IT!

Without labeling your bins, you have ZERO chance that your family will put things back into the correct bin. It is a simple step that cannot be overlooked.

Label makers and premade labels come in all styles. Pick what aesthetically feels good to you. With pre-printed sets, make sure you check it has the categories you want. For often only a few dollars more, you can get a larger set with more category label options.

If you want to invest in a quality label maker. I recommend the one below. I use it all over my house and with clients. BIG BONUS… it works through an app on your phone!

PRO TIP:  Don’t forget your DOOR bins! I often use one door bin for condiments, so the ketchup, mustard, and mayo are always at your fingertips.
